Trump Says Appointing Sessions Was a Huge Mistake

In light of the continued brouhaha in the aftermath of the Mueller Report, President Trump says his appointment of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, who resigned during the peak of the investigation, was his “biggest mistake.”

In an interview which aired this past weekend, Trump said that he views appointing Jeff Sessions as his attorney general was his “biggest mistake” as president, and said if he had a do-over, he would have tapped someone else.

Trump was on NBC’s “Meet the Press” when he made the comment. Sessions resigned last November—just after the midterms—after stark public criticism from the president. It was the height of the Mueller investigation and Trump was openly critical of Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the probe in early 2017.

At one point, Trump said, “I don’t have an attorney general. It is very sad.” Trump’s disappointment in Sessions was not limited to the Russia probe. He said he was not happy with “the border” and “numerous” other issues that Sessions’ office affected.

“Every President deserves an Attorney General they have confidence in,” Trump tweeted to Sen. Lindsey Graham. “I believe every President has a right to their Cabinet, these are not lifetime appointments. You serve at the pleasure of the President.”

Sessions and Trump

The relationship between Trump and Sessions started out strong. Sessions, formerly a Republican senator from Alabama, was a very early and staunch supporter of the President.

In February 2016, Sessions became the first serving senator to endorse Trump when the New York reality TV star and real estate developer was still a presidential candidate.

After Trump’s stunning election victory, Sessions was rewarded for his loyalty by being nominated as the top U.S. law enforcement official and head of the Justice Department.

However, it later came out that during the campaign, Sessions, who was then a close Trump adviser, met with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak.

In January 2017 in Senate confirmation hearings, Sessions said that during the campaign he had no communication with Russians. A month later, he was confirmed as attorney general. Only two months after being appointed, Sessions’ campaign ties to Kislyak were reported. Democrats accused him of lying to Congress.

Sessions then became one of the earliest Trump administration casualties of the Russian election meddling scandal, which continues to be investigated by committees of the U.S. Congress.

In the same interview where he dammed Sessions, Trump went on to praise his current attorney general, William Barr. “The job he’s done is incredible,” Trump said. “He’s brought sanity back.” He went on to say that “I think he feels that what’s happened in this country was a very bad thing and very bad for our country.”

The president repeatedly and publicly criticized Sessions when he was his attorney general. He even told the New York Times in July 2017 that he would not have appointed him attorney general had he known Sessions would have recused himself from overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. After a long period of tension, Trump fired Sessions the day after the 2018 midterm elections.

  1. I agree Sessions was a Huge mistake. I saw he was weak during the confirmation process. I couldn’t understand why Trump had appointed him. At least we have BARR now..Better late than never!

  2. There are a couple of reasons Sessions turned on the president IMO, he may have been a “plant” from the beginning but I honestly believe the Clinton cartel threatened his grand daughter’s life if he supported the president in any way.

  3. Quit whining about Sessions already. That’s water under the bridge and not at all helpful in dealing with current problems.

  4. It was too bad that Sessions did not fulfill his potential as Attorney General. I thought he was a staunch conservative, but in that office he seemed to back off from investigating those of the other party who had obviously broken the law. When will law and order ever be restored in this country? I hope Barr will bring some sanity back to the Justice Dept.
