While there were some fireworks during the latest Democratic debate, the stage was decidedly less “colorful.” Meaning that the once diverse crowd of candidates, was now down to a group of seven, consisting of mostly white men.
Notably dropped from the field were candidates “of color,” Cory Booker, Tulsi Gabbard, Julián Castro and Kamala Harris – who had qualified for the debate, but announced the cessation of her run in November. That left Andrew Yang as the only non-white on the stage.
Pete Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren got heated over their relative net worth, and traded barbs over campaign fundraising. Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden clashed over their records on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. And Amy Klobuchar – one of the breakout winners of this debate — drew contrasts with most everyone, especially Buttigieg, whose resume she dismissed as too flimsy for the presidency.
In fact, most believe that the night belonged to Senator Amy Klobuchar.
“If Klobuchar ends up mattering in February — and that’s an open question, given her current standing in the polls — this debate will be remembered as the turning point,” said Politico’s, David Siders. “It wasn’t just that she unloaded on Buttigieg. It was that she managed to unload on him while also pitting the South Bend, Ind., mayor against every other Democrat on stage and casting herself as a unifying, above-it-all figure.”
His colleague, Natasha Korecki, added, “Klobuchar was the breakout star tonight. She gave solid, compelling answers and conveyed herself as the sensible pick among her Democratic challengers.”
Klobuchar delivered a steady and solid performance with her signature lines, sharp points, and humor that resonated with voters. She also put Buttigieg in his place about his ability to win races after his attack on Warren and his cheeky remark about the fact his experience didn’t come from a “committee room in Washington.”
While Klobuchar has been making slow, steady point by point progress in the polls but with just 45 days to go until the Iowa Caucuses, it’s probably not enough to get her in the top tier. But, she proved she could still be a force to be reckoned with, and a potential spoiler to the top three who remain: Biden, Warren, and Sanders.
As for Joe Biden, many believe he had his best debate yet. He went into the debate as to the front runner and he ended the debate as to the front runner – and seemingly still the candidate who the democratic base believes has the best chance to defeat Donald Trump.
Overall, it was an often heated, and wide-ranging debate, with less than seven weeks to go until the Iowa Caucuses kick off the 2020 primaries, and just a day after House Democrats voted to impeach Trump.
The winnowed field of seven Democratic presidential contenders was on the debate stage for a sixth and final time in 2019.
