Regular readers of my columns across the internet are well familiar with the CIA’s mind control experiments known as MK-Ultra. But, if you are not, during the Cold War, MK-Ultra was a top-secret CIA project in which the agency conducted hundreds of clandestine experiments — often on unwitting U.S. citizens — to assess the potential use of LSD and other drugs for mind control, information gathering, and psychological torture.

There are those that say that the project went far beyond that and delved into “remote viewing,” developing telekinesis, and other psychic powers, including the ability to kill with the mind. People involved with the project have come out saying that they had witnessed such psychic assassinations conducted successfully on goats. This was the subject of the 2009 movie, “The Men Who Stare at Goats.”

While it is still difficult to discern how much of the program was real, and how much is conspiracy theory, there is no doubt that MK-Ultra did indeed exist. And it seems that the US Department of Defense (DoD) has never really given up on its aspirations of developing “Psychic Warriors.” There have been recent reports that the US Army is in the process of developing technology that would field “mind-reading” soldiers.

The US Army Research Office admits that it is looking into ways for soldiers on the battlefield to communicate telepathically. The future technology will be based on experiments the Research Office has been doing into separating brain signals that trigger physical actions, from those that are thoughts. Once the patterns that are thoughts can be separated from other brain activities, they could theoretically be transmitted externally via computers or other digital technologies. The idea would be to develop technologies that could eventually allow the brain to communicate with computers and send signals to other soldiers.

“In a theater, you can have two people talking to each other without even whispering a word,” said Hamid Krim, a program manager for the Army Research Office.

The development of a true human brain/computer interface has long been the “Holy Grail” of the technology industry. Mr. Krim says this is the ultimate goal of the DoD project. “At the end of the day, that is the original intent mainly — to have the computer actually being in a full direct, two-way communication mode with the brain,” said Krim.

Any sort of machine-human interface that could be used in a combat scenario is decades away, Mr. Krim added. However, recently, Elon Musk demonstrated a working brain-computer interface that he hopes will allow “human-AI symbiosis” from his startup company Neuralink.
