George Floyd Settlement Final

The city of Minneapolis will be paying the family of George Floyd a $27 million settlement in a lawsuit over his death in police custody last May.

According to the family’s lead attorney, Ben Crump, $500,000 of the settlement will go towards rebuilding the 38th Street and Chicago Avenue business district where Floyd died.

“George Floyd’s horrific death, witnessed by millions of people around the world, unleashed a deep longing and undeniable demand for justice and change,” Crump said in a statement. “That the largest pre-trial settlement in a wrongful death case ever would be for the life of a Black man sends a powerful message that Black lives do matter and police brutality against people of color must end.”

Jury selection is still going on for the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

So far, five of the six jurors are men. Three of the jurors identify as white, one as multiracial, one as Hispanic, and one as Black, according Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill, who is presiding over the case. All are in their 20s or 30s, according to court records.

Chauvin’s attorneys have rejected at least three jurors who are Hispanic throughout the week. Prosecutors have since used Batson challenges, which claim that a potential juror was eliminated based on sex, race, ethnicity, or religion. The judge denied both challenges and denied there was any pattern of eliminating jurors based on race.

  1. Interesting thought from previous comment.
My take on it is simple. …… Just like a couple of years ago in Baltimore, DON’R listen when the cops give you an odder (legal or not, that’s for the courts to decide), and then get yourself dead.
If you’re white, you MAY get a settlement based on what you MIGHT have made during the rest of your “natural” life. …. THERE IS ACTUALLY A FORMULA FOR THAT.
If you’re black, it’s automatically racial, BLM-ANTIFA will get involved, anmd your family can extort millions from the government.

  2. Because we have become a weak political correct nation. We are being bullied by the media and the weak minded left to forget about our history and how we became a great nation.

    • No!! No!! I’ don’t feel pity for this man this man and this cop caused a lot of damaged to this country after his death all the unrest riots of violence! Insurrection!! And destruction!! And what about the lives were lost!!! No!! His family should pay!! 27 Billion!!! Dollars in reparations for the Chaos!!! destruction!! Lost of life and business he cause!!!!! They don’t deserve a penny!!!

  3. Was not George Floyd a convicted criminal? Did he not threaten a pregnant woman with a knife? Wasn’t he on drugs when arrested? Did he not resist arrest?Wasn’t he arrested for passing counterfeit money? Was he not a career criminal? How can a ruling of such a fortune for George Floyd’s family seem anything but absurd! Totally whopsided and unfair! Of course any life matters but rulings as absurd as this can only serve to distance racial relationships. Along with “being less white” ANTIFA and Black Lies Matter this ruling will further racism in our country!

  4. Because this is the America that we now live in:( The $500k for damages should be assessed against the protesters they can identify from news videos except but CNN said this was a “peaceful protest”:( This country is going to hell unless something dramatic happens in 2022 – which the Dems are trying to head-off with HR 1.

  5. What do all places where UNARMED BLACK PERSONS WERE KILLED BY POLICE (except 2)have in common?
THEY ARE ALL RULED BY DEMOCRAT MAYORS AND HAVE THE POLICE OF HIS CHOICE – PLUS BIDEN’s POLICE LAWS OF 1994 and 1998!

  6. I wonder if there is at least one honest person among all these jurors who will say: – who was this Floyd, what was he in prison for and what did he die of? And if there is such a person, are normal people ready to hear him?

  7. A black criminal overdosed on drugs and dies at the seen from heart failure, after committing a crime and resisting arrest, and his family gets rich ($27 Million) and their prosecuting a WHITE POLICE OFFICER. I’ll bet it wouldn’t happen if he would have been a Whiteman nor would they block of streets and have a memorial service for him, what crap is this.

  10. Let’s look at this issue with common sense [ I realize that is hard to find these days] . Our country is based on the Constitution and LAWS,
Mr. Floyd [ regardless of his color] was on drugs, had committed crimes, was continually resisting arrest, and had a heart condition. The police officers were trying to do their duty, according to Police Policy. Even some videos show his resistance. One police officer was trying to subdue him. Did he go too far? We truly don”t know, because of the other facts. I have not seen a medical examiner’s report. But I do not believe ANY medical person can state, with any certainty, that he did not die from the drugs, etc. Regardless, he had a responsibility to surrender when the police proceeded with that attempted arrest.
The excessive amount his family is receiving SHOULD have gone to repair ALL of the damage done, in Minnesota, during the public reaction to his death.
I Sympathize with the family, truly. EVERY life is precious and he needed help with his addiction and anger addictions. But Minnesota did not deserve the damage the many riots caused
