Trump Demands End of Term Limits For GOP Committee Chairmen

In the wake of a wave of Republican retirements, President Donald Trump has just called for an end to term limits for congressional Republican committee chairs.

“House Republicans should allow Chairs of Committees to remain for longer than 6 years. It forces great people, and real leaders, to leave after serving,” Trump tweeted. “The Dems have unlimited terms. While that has its own problems, it is a better way to go. Fewer people, in the end, will leave!”

More than a dozen Republican lawmakers have announced intentions not to seek reelection next year, opening up a slew of races that Democrats hope to capitalize on to extend their majority in the House.

According to USA today, the six-year limit for GOP committee chairs was created in 1994 as a way to bring in fresh leadership into the party’s top ranks. But those retirements, and potential turnover of seats to Democratic challenges, was probably what prompted the President to urge his party to rethink the term limits.

Former House Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway, R-Texas., and former House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rob Bishop, R-Utah., both of whom are  now ranking members in their respective committees — announced in July they would not seek reelection.

USA Today said the in the past, Trump has supported electoral term limits. In 2018, he tweeted that he was giving lawmakers “my full support and endorsement” on the matter. But he has seemingly reversed course on that, even joking about extending his own term. Trump reportedly told a group of donors at Mar-a-Lago that Chinese President Xi Jinping remains “president for life” and joked that “maybe we’ll have to give that a shot someday.”

  1. Build the wall; no chain visas; only merit visas; no lottery visas; no amnesty for illegals; only English language; no aid of any kind to illegals; no social help of any kind; voting with photo ID only; teach constitution and bill of rights in school; audit the FED reserve; maintain the electoral college; keep the second amendment; issue an exec order so demonstrators are not allowed to hide their faces

  2. I understand the President wanting the same standards and rules for the Republicans in the House as the Democrats observe to their advantage. There is a big advantage to getting new representatives as well.

  3. Term limits need to be in place for both parties. The longer people are in Washington the more corrupt they become. PERIOD

  4. First off could someone explain to me why one party can have no term limits bit the other cant? This right here is a prime example of just how overly powered the Democratic party is and it should either be even on the rules for both parties or no rules at all. And hey Trump what you should be pushing for is no more term limits on the Presidency. It seems as though by what we have witnessed since you took office, the President really does not have all the power most of us assumed he or she did. Because apparently just about any judge and or the congress and senate can knock down an executive order. So if you want to fight for real change then change how long a President can stay in office, we need you more than just for eight years.

  5. Term limits should be in affect for all government officials,
    And this would include EVERYONE!
The problem we endure nowadays is the long term
of some democrats, that have screwed this country.
Let me say ALL OF THE DEMOCRATS, have screwed us
    in some way or another.
With term limits, we learn quickly who’s going to screw us in advance, instead of enduring a long misuse of power that should be in the hands of a responsible President like Donald Trump, and he has done more than any other presidents in decades.
