Despite his words of unity and cooperation, President-elect Joe Biden has been a partisan figure for a long time. We need to remember his frequent tough guy responses to reporters and voters, such as when he called a young female student a “lying dog-faced pony soldier” and his responses to questions about his son.
After the demonstration that turned into a riot at the Capitol Building, Biden used a political muleta on President Trump in his address to the nation. Instead of a call for unity in the post-Trump era, Biden presented a prosecutorial closing argument against Trump. He reiterated a four-year history of every grievance that the left has proffered against the President – real and concocted. He even brought up the shop-worn and repudiated Russian conspiracy theory.
As with any prosecutorial closing, Joe Biden left no room for any positive personal characteristics or accomplishment by the “defendant.” Of course, the President-elect was proffering in the court-of-public-opinion where there are no defendant rights or rules-of-evidence – and before a biased jury (the press) salivating to malign and convict the outgoing President of every conceivable charge brought by Biden.
Biden’s tone could only be described as angry determination. He was out to get President Trump – who, unfortunately, has provided Biden a pile of stuff with which to get him. But Biden did not limit himself to legitimate complaints. As is often the case with prosecutorial briefs, Biden threw in everything including the kitchen sink.
Biden’s address to the nation undermined any efforts he may have planned to unify the nation – to bring people together.
One might argue that Trump was getting what he deserved for all his ad hominin attacks on Biden and his son Hunter, but the President-elect loses credibility by resorting to the same sort of mendacious personal attacks as the man he so brutally criticizes.
We have heard a lot about “Sleepy Joe” and his weak personality – his surrender to aging – but I never quite bought that image. I think Republicans – and even those on the left edge of his own Party—will discover that Joe Biden is one very tough Irish politician. His latest speech serves as an example.
So, there ‘tis.
